Let's Visit Turkey

Welcome to Wallaroo Wanderlust, a monthly series that invites you to travel the world with Stephanie Carter, CEO of Wallaroo.

When I travel, I meet new people, learn about new cultures, flavors, and landscapes, and get a chance to observe different ways of living.  Plus, travel nourishes the body, mind, and spirit, and offers time for rest and a much-needed break from the routines of daily life.

Earlier this summer, I had the opportunity to visit Turkey and I’m excited to tell you about my adventure and share some interesting facts about this new destination.

A Bit About Turkey

Turkey has been referred to as a crossroads of continents, where the charm of Europe meets the allure of Asia. Most of its land is located in Western Asia and a smaller part is found in Southeastern Europe. Travel to Turkey’s largest city, Istanbul to find the Bosphorus Strait marking the continental divide and making it the only city that straddles two continents. Further, Turkey is bordered by eight countries and therefore influenced by multiple cultures and scenery. The Black Sea borders the north, the Aegean to the west, and the Mediterranean borders the south.

Must-See Sites in Turkey

Istanbul has iconic sites including the Blue Mosque, the Basilica Cistern, Suleymaniye Mosque, and the Grand Bazaar, one of the biggest and oldest covered shopping markets in the world.

Cappadocia which features the “fairy chimney” rock formations, cave dwellings, and the well-known magical hot air balloon rides.

Pamukkale, a natural wonder where you can dip your feet in thermal springs and explore nearby ruins of Hierapolis.

Ölüdeniz for paragliding and snorkeling, swimming, and other beach activities along the Mediterranean.

Turkish baths (Hammans) and local markets- relax, explore, and discover the unique traditions, crafts, foods, and spices of the cities throughout Turkey.

When to Go

The best times to visit Turkey are spring (April to June) or fall (September to November), when the weather is mild and comfortable. Summer travel to Turkey (July and August) can be very hot, especially along the coast. If you travel to inland areas like Cappadocia during the winter, you may see snow and colder temperatures.

What to Pack

Since sightseeing in Turkey will most likely include mosques or other religious sites, bring modest attire. Comfortable walking shoes, lightweight, breathable clothing for daytime and layers for cooler nights. For activities like hiking, hot air balloon rides, going to the beach, and other outdoor activities, pack sunglasses, sunblock, and of course, a packable and foldable UPF 50+ Wallaroo hat. Great choices include the lightweight & breathable Kristy hat or the Breton for women, or the Carkella Tahoe or the Carter hat for men.

Where to Stay & How to Get Around Turkey

Turkey has accommodations for travelers of all budgets and travel preferences. Choose from luxury hotels, family-run inns, cave hotels, and family-friendly resorts. You can easily access Turkey via Istanbul’s international airports. Within the country, public transportation is reliable and affordable, and car rentals are a valid option.

Gastronomy of Turkey

The Mediterranean diet is alive and well in Turkey - enjoy fresh ingredients, flavorful spices, grilled meats and specialties like kebabs, fresh seafood, hearty soups, and appetizer platters. Visit markets for spices and local specialties and be sure to try the iconic Baklava dessert. Lunch is typically eaten between 12:00 and 1:30 p.m., while dinner is enjoyed later in the evening, starting at 7:00 p.m.

My trip to Turkey reminded me of the magic of travel - it’s amazing how one journey can open your eyes to so many layers of culture, history, and human connection… and show you just how much beauty is out there waiting to be discovered through travel.

Perhaps this is your call to plan your next trip.
